Congratulations to Till Stephan for being named a Regional Winner in the 5th Annual Image of the Year Contest by Evident Scientific! Beauty of cosmic proportions found in microscopic imaging — The contest, now in its fifth year, celebrates the world’s finest scientific microscopy images. This year, submissions poured in from 29 countries, and for the first time, included a video category highlighting dynamic processes captured under the microscope.
In the award-winning shot, Till Stephan’s image showcases cardiomyocytes—heart cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)—captured using a Leica SP8 confocal laser scanning microscope. The tile scan highlights F-actin (yellow) and mitochondria (cyan) after chemical fixation, revealing intricate cellular architecture.
