In present models of the nuclear pore complex, the inside shows a large whole that would not present a sufficient protection for the genome inside the nucleus. SCALE members Edward Lemke, Gerhard Hummer and Martin Beck finally visualized how disordered proteins form a spaghetti-like mobile barrier inside the nuclear pore that is permeable for important cellular factors but blocks viruses or other pathogens.
