Fake Science: How to Spot Predatory Journals

How to identify typical characteristics of predatory journals and publishers, as well as criteria for distinguishing trustworthy journals from “predatory journals” and fake journals

For decades, the flood of scientific publications has been increasing and, unfortunately, so has the number of fakes (or at least suspected cases with a very high probability of fakes), from data and texts to entire journals and publishers. Some of these rotten apples are not so easy to recognize; they use a number of methods to deceive trust-ing and unsuspecting researchers into accepting the results or into submitting their manuscripts. Some researchers under pressure to publish are inclined to go along with this fraudulent business model.

This interactive lecture is intended in particular to outline the characteristics of fake/predatory journals, paper mills and publications in order to show participants the distinction between good and not-so-good journals and, above all, predatory journals and publishers, so that they can publish their own research results successfully. Publications during the doctorate in predatory journals can lead to problems later on if the journals are classified as fake and thus all (good) results get a bad reputation or are no longer recognized and accepted at all (e.g. also for a cumulative dissertation).

All welcome!!
