The SCALE consortium is officially invited to submit the full proposal for the Excellence Strategy (ExStra) and with it reaches the final stage of the competition. The SCALE draft proposal was one out of 143 draft proposals submitted to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in May 2023. The decision to invite 41 Excellence Initiatives to the final phase of the competition was made by the Excellence Commission on the basis of the Committee of Experts’ recommendations.

The Clusters of Excellence funding line is designed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) to support project-based funding in internationally competitive fields of research at universities or university consortia and to strengthen Germany’s position as an outstanding research hub in the long term and further improve its international competitiveness. The final funding decision on the future Clusters of Excellence will be made on 22 May 2025.

Michaela Müller-McNicoll, Spokesperson of SCALE, will become Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) of Biophysics. As a Max Planck Fellow she will head a research group at the MPI for 5 years starting in March 2024. At the same time, she will continue to lead her group at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences at the Goethe University Frankfurt investigating RNA Regulation in Higher Eukaryotes.

The Max Planck Fellows program aims to strengthen cooperations between Max Planck Institutes and universities and appoints excellent researchers for five years who already established successful collaborations with scientists at the MPI offering the possibility to set up a workgroup during that period.

Inga Hänelt, Spokesperson of SCALE, received this year’s “Scientist of the Year” award from the Alfons und Gertrud Kassel-Stiftung for her outstanding research on bacterial membrane transport systems and her commitment to supporting early career researchers. The award was presented with two more prizes, the Public Service Fellowship and the New Horizon, in a festive ceremony.

The Alfons und Gertrud Kassel-Stiftung awards the prize every second year to an excellent researcher at the Goethe University Frankfurt with far-reaching scientific work and impact on the promotion of early career researchers.

This year’s annual Walther Flemming Award goes to SCALE member Florian Wilfling for his work on “ultrastructural analysis of autophagy using correlative cryo-electron tomography”. The Walther Flemming Award is offered for excellent research in cell biology by the German Society for Cell Biology (DGZ) and ibidi GmbH. The award is given to senior postdoctoral researchers and early career group leaders for their recent work.

SCALE member Gerhard Hummer belongs to the Highly Cited Researchers 2023 in the newly published list by Clarivate Analytics. A place among the Highly Cited Researchers is a special honor for a researcher, as it emphasizes the significance and far-reaching influence of their scientific work.

The evaluation and selection process is based on data from the Web of Science citation index, together with analysis performed by bibliometric experts and data scientists. In total, the list includes more than 7.000 Highly Cited Researchers in 2023, from more than 1.300 institutions in 67 nations and regions.
